Well.. it depends on what album you hear..

but the "classic" Beefheart sound kinda sounds like 4 musicians playing completely different songs with a guy reciting poetry in no time signature over top.. yet somehow there are occasional melodies and lots of hooks.. the sound later got weird yet more accessible, then it got too accessible and was boring, then it got weird again, then.. I dunno.

Just, if you get a chance, listen to anything except "unconditionally guranteed" and "bluejeans and moonbeams". It may not register at first -- it didn't with me -- but eventually you'll be hooked.
