burzum is given much more credit and most people have a very high opinion about it but it's not like burzum is the end all be all of black metal. the truth is that the music is influential to a certain extent, since varg himself has stated that he wouldn't be making that kind of music if he hadn't heard mayhem and, above all, darkthrone to begin with, and his music is a take on blaze and funeral moon-era darkthrone and mid-period mayhem. also, most people respond to the music knowing the man behind it, they consider the music way more evil and emotional because of varg's actions and notoriety; it certainly isn't the same reaction you get when saying "i like black metal" and follow that sentence mentioning "cradle of filth" instead of "burzum". most people think burzum's songs are about killing christians and burning churches and being a nazi, they buy into the whole "count grishnakh" thing and feel that's so wrong it's exciting to listen to burzum.
burzum are pretty great on it's musical merits, don't get me wrong. it's just that as i said before, they are not the end all be all bm band. especially since there's bands like wigrid, for example, that have come and progressed over the burzum sound to new heights.

yeah, i read that too, but he does change opinions as much as he changes ideologies so it's not a sure thing.
