And I've said it before, I'll say it again, and I don't care if people disrespect me after this: I like almost everything Metallica has done. The first few albums are amazing, their cover songs are great, the Black album/Load/Reload are.. hmm.. they're okay, I guess, but I really dig St. Anger. There's just something about that album. I really want to hate it and I have made fun of it, but the fact is, it's just a truely bizarre record that is good in spite of itself. The production is really cool (minus the sewage pipe drums) and the guitar tones are amazing and.. weird. One of the songs has 17 riffs! I don't really enjoy Metallica as people or even as a concept, but their music appeals to me for some odd reason. Though nothing will ever beat fucking Master of Puppets.

Master of Puppets is a classic, not just for the band, but also metal, and 20th century music as a whole...it's probably the only Metallica album I still listen to. I think the problem with
St. Anger (despite what metalhead wanky guitar solo lovers would tell you) wasn't its lack of lead playing but more the fact that the songs were just too long for their simplicity- riffs and yelling are not the way to make epic songs...as for the production, I actually kind of liked the "sewage pipe" drum sound, but sometimes the guitars sounded out of tune or intonation or something.
Back to grindcore...it's not really something that interests me. Probably the closer thing to grindcore I've been able to really appreciate (sp?) is Meshuggah, and even then, I'm not sure I'd describe them as grindcore.
