if a person tries to make conversation and be nice, dont want to say something degrading to him/her. not even bother now saying how this all would handled if the person asking was an idiot (in behaviour).

Exactly, I never say "You wouldn't know them." It's ignorant.
Really my initial response doesn't change even if the person knows quite a bit about music. "I don't know, stuff," is a good response. If they press for more information, just tell them your favorite group or what you've been listening to lately. No need to summarize everything with a "clever" made-up term.
