I got started around 0006 EST because it took a while to find the tape I wanted to record the album, too. Then had to wipe the record clean. Plus my dogs pestered me, kept stepping on the line to the headphones, and interfering with me getting established in the comfy chair. But overall it was a great experience. I love this album, and seldom play it straight through anymore, so this was a great way to catch up with it again. It was much like my teenaged years when I spent hours with it.
I did it. I fell asleep during Side 3, though, right in the middle of "Everybody's Got Something to Hide," woke up with the needle clacking in the dead wax, must have been doing that for like 10 minutes. Dammit. Went on to Side 4, though. Then I replayed Side 3.
I was reminded how schizoid this album is. Man, it's all over the place. As usual on every Beatles album, I love the Harrison songs. Why didn't those cunts let him contribute more stuff? His songs are the best. My favorite on the whole white album is "While My Guitar...," but more than any other album, I can actually enjoy the McCartney songs, and every song, even the ones I don't love, have some element to enjoy. The "ooo's" in the background of "Back in the USSR," the "aahhh's" in "Dear Prudence," the part near the end of "Happiness is a Warm Gun" where the band drops out and Lennon sings, "Happiness is a warm yes it is.... (pause)... GU-uh-unnn...." Wow.
I was too tired to pull out the poster and photos. Sometimes I do that and gawk at them for a while like a nerdy 13-year-old.
