Actually, I think The Doors, The Velvet Underground, Zappa's Mothers and a couple of other American acts
were the original hippie bands (or beatnik bands, considering when they got started). The other (mostly) lesser talented acts came along a year or two later and exploited the whole scene, commercialised it, emphasised the sillier, zanier elements.
