What's your caffeine intake?
What's your diet?
How much exercise do you get?
What's your alcohol consumption?
Are you under stress?
What do you do to relax?
Do you try to stick to a normal bedtime?
These are all questions you must address.
Most psychologists will recommend that you stick to regular sleep schedules, and that you get a minimum of eight hours of rest. You need eight hours of full restorative sleep, as a minimum. Everybody does. Anything less is bad for your mental and physical health.
Most psychologists will also recommend that you go to bed at your regular time and stay there, even when you can't sleep. Don't get up to do something else. Toss and turn if you have to, but stay there. This trains your body eventually to adhere to a regular time and schedule for sleep.
You must also not become dependent on artificial measures such as that shot of whiskey or a sleeping pill. This won't allow your body to become accustomed on a regular basis to the full restorative sleep you need.
When you start fucking with your sleep cycle, you do in fact fuck it up and make it hard to get back into a regular pattern.
Amend this now.
