Yes, you should start with Psychic Hearts. I'm perhaps the biggest experimental music/noise geek on here, but I still love that album the most. It's as good as a straight up Sonic Youth album while a lot of his other solo material has "side project" written all over it. Incredible pop songs, followed by "Elegy For All the Dead Rock Stars" which is one of the best melodic, repetative Thurston guitar jams ever.
Among his experimental/noise releases, I'm partial to Flipped Out Bride.
I haven't gotten Trees Outside the Academy yet, because when I saw him live doing those songs, they just seemed blown away by the Psychic Hearts material at the end.
