I have a long running theory that human consciousness, the bit that separates us mentally from the other animals on this beautiful earth, came about as a result of eating hallucinogenic mushrooms, and psychoactive plants. The "trip" they send a person on, or a homo erectus, or a austrelopithecus, or whatever, would have alloed them to ste outside of themselves for the first time and by doing so become truly self-conscious.
if you get your dog and cat high by blowing weed at them, after a few times, you can see them eperienceing this. and the smart ones start to understand english
that last part was just what I have experienced, not part of my theory.
