Aristophanes was cracking fart jokes some 2,400 years ago.
He often poked fun at well-known persons in Athens, and his comedy "Clouds" features Socrates "farting under the covers" having a hard time getting up out of bed in the morning and postulating that the sound of thunder is produced when clouds fart. The play contains numerous other risque references about penis size, masturbation, and poop as well.
The satire has a message, however, about the importance of free speech in a democratic society.
Many seem to know "Lysistrata," perhaps his out-and-out masterpiece, but "Clouds" is great stuff too.
