As far as I'm concerned with rock:
It's limited to a small number of instruments (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) and there's only so many chord progressions you can come up with before you're just repeating yourself. It was doomed after 30 or so years and came to a nice end in the 90's. Then post-rock came in as a response.
The future of music is undoubtably in DSP.
