1. What's more important, democracy or freedom of religion?
(Was the Turkish military coup to preserve freedom of religion justified?)
Freedom of religion, and thought in general. A democratically elected leader who threatens our basic human rights should always be overthrown, preferably without violence.
2. How do we decide which immoral behavior should be punishable by the state and which immoral behavior should not?
When the behavior breaches someone else's rights
3. Can someone who has committed a heinous crime be so punished by their own guilt that no sentence is needed?
I think so, but nobody can see into another persons mind to be able to decide that.
4. Does the penal system keep society safer or does it have an inverse effect?
It keeps us safer from the criminally insane, but makes criminal orginizations stronger
5. How far should the genetic engineering of humans go? Are we at risk of breeding a generation with an Aryan attitude in which naturally created humans are considered inferior?
It should go no farther than preventing serious genetic life threatening diseases such as cystic fibrosis. Anything more than that, and I believe it might.
6. Is incest wrong because of offspring's potential genetic defects, or is it because of the nature of family?
It is wrong because of the nature of families.
7. Is it important for small ethnicities to continue on? If an ethnicity dies out due to reproducing with other ethnicities, is that a bad thing?
While it is important to have respect for your ethnicity, cultures and ethnicities blending is not a bad thing, it strengthens the human race.
8. With modern day weaponry- smart bombs, tanks, nukes, etc. . . how can people hold any power over their government?
I think tomorrow's revolutionary leader has to look to computer hackers for soldiers
9. Do humans need attempt to control their population, or will natural occurrences take control?
I think natural occurrences will control it naturally, being the 4th of 6th, a 2 child per family rule disgusts me, but in impoverished nations, prophylactic distribution could do wonders.
10. Is the world overpopulated with humans? Is there enough wealth to go around?
It isn't overpopulated yet, the earth has plenty of sustainable resources, though they are being mismanaged. Imagine all the food that could be produced by those tobacco and coffee fields
11. How important is space exploration and space settlement?
Very important to the survival of the human race. There are lots of resources out there, and a cataclysmic event could wipe us out.
12. Is there a way to stop urban sprawl?
I think so. Demolishing it and planting seeds while re-engineering the way we live would be a good start
13. Can civil engineers find a way for us to live more harmoniously with our environment?
Tokyo engineers already have sky-city. Settlement integrated with the ecology is very important too.
