OVAL "94DISKONT"
1996, Thrill Jockey

Besides being an "important" record in electronic music (being one of the first glitch records and definitely a starting point for anyone interested in the methods used for creating glitch sounds -- in this case, the album is made of loops made from sampled cd's that were scratched with exacto knives and painted over with makrers and such), this is also a really great record. It is a lot less spastic and all over the place like most glitch records, instead being very very warm and inviting. Ambient music for people that's also for people who don't like ambient music, perhaps. While all the tracks are excellent, the standout is "Do While", the opening track... 24 minutes of multi layered organs and bells that delay in and skip and constantly have minor variations every time you hear them.. a very organic glitch record. Also the first album I ever tripped to! Not for everyone, of course; it's a pretty love it or hate it album and I feel a little weird reccomending it because it's pretty hard for some people to connect with except those in love with the aesthetics behind the record. And while that's initially what got me interested in the record, the brilliant music is what kept me listening. A classic!!
