I'm sure he was ALWAYS a douchebag. the world just caught up to (and surpassed) his level of darkness. without the relevancy of evil to prop up his image (9/10 neo-goth-punks prefer Marilyn Manson), the cracks started to show.
that said, the Thrasher Magazine - June '86 interview with him had a serious impact on my yet-to-be-DOOM-filled mind.
