The art world is mimicking industry, I assure you. Remember Warhol's factory? (Generalising massively) artists tended to rely upon benefactors prior to him, and Warhol got his notions from industry, not vice-versa.
Everyone's a prick, but artists have only relatively recently become mercenary.
