Not specific to games Consoles but the DVD is one of the most industry manipulated media going. It has next to no durability. Even if you're careful and have a good player the likelihood of a disc playing perfectly after repeated playing over a couple of years is slight. The industry forced the market by withdrawing VHS, which may lack the audio/visual quality of DVD but is infinitely more durable (I have tapes that are twenty five years old which still play perfectly well after literally hundreds of plays).

The sooner the industry moves away from discs and embraces some other kind of storage more fully, the sooner we can move away from the utter stupidity that is DVDs. Blu-Ray is just a further step in the wrong direction as far as I'm concerned.
