You answered your own question. If you fuck with your equipment, it will fuck up. Don't let Kurt Cobain fool you, they started buying equipment just to break on the encores...
I cant tell you what is exactly wrong with your amp, but I would take it apart and check to see if your input jack is cool, and check any other wiring.
