so it turns out comcast (isp in the house i'm staying) blocks port 25 for send mail.

so i had to change ports.

thing is, it's not so evident how to change the port for the outgoing mail server. the option is there, but it's a bit hidden and i was more than slightly *cough* intoxicated.

you can't change the port in the server settings. you have to wait for the program to report the fuckup, edit server, go advanced, and there, and only there, you can change the port. the other method (google it) involves entering a long fuckwad of a string into the terminal window.

ah, good times.
