I have written to loads of small indie bands. Not since the internet took over though. It was the only way to keep in touch with new releases back in the day. Some bands are really nice and send you proper letters (depends on the size of the band, I suppose).

I think that's one thing the internet stopped - you used to be able to get signed things and little odds and sods a lot easier before there was this fear of ebay selling. I don't know if bands would be so happy to sign sleeves and things you send them now.
