I haven't mentioned functionality anywhere at all in my critique. And the analogy between tattoos and jewelry and clothing falls flat immediately in the impermanence of the latter. I can donate my shirt to a shelter if I stop liking the band and I can pawn the jewelry when I fall out with the person who gave it to me. In this, clothing and jewelry are subject of our original passion.

However, again, I've said nothing critical about the utility of tattoos.
