Doesn't mean their work was overrated, or short of genius, and can't be enjoyed. I feel like aspects of the beatles and sonic youth were UNDERRATED. Ringo was in one of Liverpool's biggest knife gangs for fuck sake, they were the first pop band to start doing heavy heavy drugs and incoorperate it's affects in their music...and still sell tons of records...

. Personally I like the beatles, but I think they are overrated in some ways. First off, who gives a shit if they wrote pop music masterpieces? I like/love pop music as much as anyone, but so? I think their lyrics are very often neutral or cringe-worthy. Also, who cares about Ringo being a violent gang banger? He still wrote "Octopus's Garden" which is one of the worst songs I have ever heard in my life by any band, and it really brings that album down as a whole. And who cares about the fact that they incorporated drug use into their music? Big shit. Drug use isn't inherently good or bad for music, so I really don't see what kind of bearing it has on the argument.
That said, I like the Beatles a lot and am glad that they influenced so many artists that I like even more, but they are definitely overrated by their biggest fans. No doubt about it. You Beatles people seem to think every tiny thing they did was a revelation. Some of them were, but not as many as you like to say.
