I was going to create a list that was more or less similar to what we've already seen in this thread and then it ocurred to me that I most always hear a lot of these tunes when out drinking, or actually at a late night eatery after drinking or as Glice said a wedding, and the thing is I love to hate most of these songs.
Take ''American Pie'', yes it is way overplayed, I've heard it thousands of times, at former jobs, on commercial radio, at stores, restaurants, everywhere, and I am sick with it, done.
BUT
A few months ago I was walking with a friend and her dog late at night/early morning. We had been drinking and we stopped at this all night falafel stand to get some food. The guy working the stand had a little shit radio that was playing this very song. Our friend had just died and we both were feeling a little woebegone, so she turns to me and says
''Do you have your flask?'' Which I did, but I asked her why
''Cause I fucking hate this song, but right now I really want to sing along with it.'' I snickered, got my flask out poured her a drink, took a deep long bite from it and sang along with her to American Pie.
And the fact that I knew it, was in so many situations with this song around, helped me enjoy the moment.
Thats what those songs are for, something to fall back on for us know-it-alls and something to look forward to for the general masses.
Besides all that sentimental melancholy ''needle in the hay'' prose, if I was sober or in a bad mood I'd tell the song to get fucked.
