The examples in the past (or in the present according to those who still think of, say, China as being a communist country) would never be deemed as such by any Leninist for obvious historical reasons. Now, I don't know how much you're informed about the subject apart from what your parents told you, but it's very likely to be a distorted version of what communism is all about that was passed on to them from generations of wrong-doing.
