I think the rapping thing may be a joke, though a very weak, half-ironic joke.
I'm certain, though, that the side hug thing is legit. I actually had the misfortune of being dragged to one of those Youth Ministry Conference things as part of my Confirmation. In fact, it played a big role in my desertion of the faith. That taint of dumb evangelism stood antithetical to what was, and to an extent still is, my spiritual identity.
