I have one friend in particular who's prone to making such remarks while we're sitting in restaurants and bars--this is a big university town with a goodly proportion of homosexuals in its population, and more than a few of them are a lot tougher looking and more physically fit than either my friend or me. So not only am I embarassed by the ignorance of my friend's remarks, but I'm also afraid for my personal safety.
Anyway, suffice it to say gay-bashing really has no place in any context these days.

Something I worry about with my on-line ramblings. Round these parts, we indulge stereotypes. It's part of the humour - ergo, I'm comfortable that I'm not homophobic, so my use of pseudo-homophobic humour is more parodying the utterly ridiculous idea of being homophobic 'in today's society'. It's a tightrope though, and that side of the humour doesn't necessarily come through on t'interknob.
