I know I've posted about this game a few times before, but really.. this game needs all the attention it can get. It's a freeware 2D sidescroller, in the vein of Metroid, and it is EASILY the coolest freeware game I've played, one of my favorite 2D games ever (with Adventures of Little Ralph for the PS1, and Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night -- all 3, coming to mind when playing this game -- being the only titles that best it) -- and a game that NEEDS your attention. I am pretty sure you can get this for the PSP, the DS, and the Wii now (I am going to get it for my girlfriend's Wii tomorrow and continue playing on there) but the original PC version is probably the one anyone can grab. All the info you need/downloads are at this site... and I have my fingers crossed someone will eventually do a Dreamcast port, and/or a PS1 port... and some other systems that are very popular amongst homebrew/hacking/etc communities.. that way, this game can truly take over the world. I am completely 100% inspired to go further with my video game creation (I have designed an LSD-Tripping Simulator Game, and started on an RPG that was based on my novel MAKE IT BE A WARM DAY, but nothing too substantial has been created yet.. seeing this game, which was ENTIRELY made by one person -- graphics, sound fx, music, art, level design -- and seeing how AMAZING it is just blows my mind... 5 years he spent on this thing.. I really want to spend 5 years on a piece of art.. it'll be worth it.
PLAY THIS GAME! IT REPRESENTS EVERYTHING THAT'S RIGHT WITH THE GAMING WORLD! INFO/use links to download and so on: http://www.cavestory.org/info_1.php (dd I mention the "downloads section" has a FREE music composer, which was used to make this game?! ... yes, he made his own music composing software in order to make this game and gave it away for free. What..?!) damn! |

BTW, even if you for some reason have no interest playing the game, you should download the soundtrack of the year:
http://www.cavestory.org/downloads/soundtrack.zip This Cave Story soundtrack includes all music and sound effects. Most sounjd like some long lost 8-bit game, and even occasionally matches classic soundtracks like Journey to Silius and Mega Man 2. No kidding. I would reccomend the s oundtrack to lovers of music, period. Melodically brilliant. I played for a friend who had no interest in playing the game and he changed his mind when he heard the sondtrack. 42mb. |

Al -- it's right up your alley. I am happy you're getting it, dude. It's totally going to rule you.
BTW.. Did you get PERSONA 2 INNOCENT SIN with the english patch workin' man? I burned it and played it on my ps1 just fine (the torrent from piratebay). Great translation. I played quite a bit into it, but it's a pretty long game so I'm taking a break from it. It seems easier than Eternal Punishment -- I'd already died quite a bit in EP by the point I'm in, time-wise, in Innocent Sin. I think Eternal Punishment is perhaps a bit better. I do find it funny that you visit so many of the same locations in both games and talk to so many of th same people (what's interestin gis that many of the characters are.. let's just say.. DIFFERENT.. in both games). Overall, a very impressive patching of a very impressive game. And they're going to do all the other SMT games for the PS1! I have the SMT ones English-patched for the SNES.. and of course, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Treasure Hunter G, Secret of Mana 2... got any other patched games you reccomend (besides Policenauts which I got for the PS1)?? I'd say, perhaps, Mother 3 is the coolest/most important patched game i've played. I got halfway through that one and lost interest a year ago.. guess that reminds me, I should pick that back up! hMM.. I wonder how to play it on the GameCube ewith the GBA player.. how to put it on a cart or something.. hmm.. that'd be badass, I must say.. |

I played it a few years ago, and I have to agree, it's brilliant. Freeware titles like this are very inspirational... I probably even like it as much as I like Symphony of the Night, and that says a lot, since I love Castlevania. Super Metroid is probably slightly better though, but I mean, Cave Story is almost up there and it's a freeware game. It's pretty cool. Play it people.

Holy shit is right, Eugene! Have you played any of those? Lots of those look awesome. I'm getting Yume Nikki now but I won't be playing that for a while, I'm hooked as shit on Cave Story.

Same here, and no I haven't. I just browsed through the CaveStory forums for a sec, and stumbled upon those.

OK, a friend told me about this a while ago and I was kinda like, "OK, I'll check it out sometime" and pretty much forgot about it. I decided to take the plunge and I must say, I'm sorry I didn't check it out when he told me about it. The music is great, the gameplay is a lot of fun, and the story, while fairly simplistic so far, is pretty entertaining. It really is like some long-lost 8- or early 16-bit game. I'm at the part where you're trying to get Santa's key in Grasstown (check out those tiles).

there's an AMAZING homebrew port of Cave Story for PSP. Really incredible. If you have a PSP you need it.
