how many times do i have to say this?
pavement were fucking geniuses. it's not even that i listen to them very often anymore. but to just look at what they do on a systematic level, everything makes sense. you want to talk about melody? pavement are the fucking kings of good melody. their guitar interplay, while not fucking polvo or anything, was still very unique for its time and most of all, pavement never made the same album -- or song, really -- twice. quite a feat for a band with like 200 songs. very VERY consistent songwriting. good band. |

I wouldn't call their songwriting consistent, but nevermind.

I find that almost every Pavement song is good. The ones that are bad were almost intended to be so.

it's like thinking fellers union local 282 -- yeah, they had filler, but it was compelling!
i think to some people, serpentine pad would be considered filler. but that's my favorite fucking song! |

WOWEE FUCKING ZOWEE.
Slanted and Enchanted is so overrated and it all seems to linger in one fuzzy place on the edge of rock and roll. Don't get me wrong, it's a good album, but it has nothing on the creative pinnacle pavement had reached by wowee zowee. By then they had it down. Perfected. Making it look so easy, too. |

I've never been too excited with Pavement to look into all that much. I got Slanted & Enchanted but it didn't came off as anything special. Typical indie rock. "No Life Singed Her" and "Jackals, False Grails" were the only songs to really caught my attention. But the overall sound of the album didn't make me too inspired to look in further into Pavement.
Maybe I should buy Wowee Zowee cuz of all the positive buzz. |

pbradley, i'm surprised you like swirlies but don't like slanted.. seems pretty similiar, except swirlies are a lot poppier and more shoegazey.. but they're still weird noise pop groups.. hmm hmm.
i actually think all of pavement's albums are genius. and like i said many posts ago, i don't even really listen to them. it's like yo la tengo. i don't need to listen to them either, but i can safely say that it's enjoyable every time i do. and that they have so many fucking great songs it's amazing. |

If it weren't for the Swirlies ability to combine mid to late Sonic Youth-like guitar melodies (Park The Car comes to mind) with early MBV vocals and poppier shoegazing fuzz, I probably wouldn't dig them all that much.
I don't see Pavement as being all that noisy/noisy enough (except for those two songs that I liked). |

hmm, they've definitely got a super trebley noise sound. definitely on westing and slanted.
but i see what you're saying, just curious. it's like my friend the other day is the biggest throbbing gristle fan ever and he was listening to some wolf eyes album that's identical to throbbing gristle. and he said "i fucking hate wolf eyes." and i said, "dude this sounds EXACTLY like throbbing gristle." and he sat there for a second and went "Hmm.. true." WHAT?! |

I answered S&E, but CRCR is hands down my favorite.
Especially the deluxe edition... there's another album's worth of material on the second disc (not to mention all the splendid extras on the first) that really gets my zod hopping. Amen. |

Can't believe WZ is losing. Well, I can, but I still think it should be putting up a better fight. And yes, CRCR Deluxe fucking rocks.

I agree w/ Mark 100%. Wowee has so much emotion & passion, IMO. It can take you up, & bring you down at the same time. & how can you beat a 3 sided LP.
