i voted 80s+ along with pretty much eveyone else, you cant beat Evol, sister, and daydream nation. thoes albums are the greatist and for them to come in a row one after another is unbelieveable.
i think after that sonic youth started putting out some not so great albums, Washine machine and murray street are fantastic, up in thesame league as evol etc. but although dirty, goo, a thousand leaves, EJST&NS, NYCG&F, and sonic nurse have some great songs on them they are not consistant all the way through. |

i like all phases...those 4 stages are completely different, with a different perspective of sound and composition...that difference make SY an unique band...its difficult to get bored with SY

I voted for the 80's also... but I have to say that the SYR series is pure golden joy as well.

They're early '80s stuff mainly for glory day reasons but also because they changed my perception of what music was (and got me out of my punk/metal rut in high school). A friend loaned me Bad Moon after I heard Death Valley 69 on kdvs and that blew me away. I was starting to listen to old school industrial like TG and Nurse w/wound but SY rocked and was experimental while doing it. I had their two neutral releases within the week after that. Thousand Leaves and the SYR albums got me hooked back into the band hard core though. Saw them all three nights at The Fillmore on that tour and they brought me to tears each night. I'm liking this new album despite what some of you guys are saying about it. I hope they rip it up tomorrow!
