I'm listening to Max Bygraves doing a song that I know better from Mr Orbison's version (I can't stop loving you). So I thought I'd canvass some thoughts on crooners. Who's your favourite crooner? Is Morrisey a crooner? Paul Robeson or Peter Dawson? Can you have a female crooner? French or English? Is crooning the heir to chanson/ lieder?
Ok, those are my questions - maybe you have your own? Maybe I'll make a poll.

Moz has become a crooner, sure. I can't even find my own testicles at the moment, so I'll just say that Glen Campbell is double cool for being cool and having been covered by Myspacemen 3.

I think the word crooner was originally used as a derogatory term to describe a singer of ballads. I suppose somebody like Bing Crosby is the archetypal crooner.

I don't know about crooners too much, but Mr. Orbison was the/still is the shit. Elvis Pressley was a crooner. I'd say K.D. Lang from what I've heard of her is the closest to a female crooner we got.

I was thinking of Edith Piaf with the female crooner bit. Bing I haven't spent any time listening to, maybe I should...

Arthur Tracey
Peter Dawson Paul Robeson Skip to 2:00 minutes - the dialogue is pretty annoying. It is phsically impossible to dislike this song More Frank. Love those fag adverts Cry like a man, why don't you? Something for the Latin crooner lovers Something for those over the pond With subtitles in some Scandinavian language. So, someone tell me about crooners from non-English speaking countries.

When it all goes wrong
Although he's not beyond redemption He is though. This is a brilliant song as well. Arsewipe. Perhaps not crooning, but literally my second favourite song of ever. Which it is literally impossible to do a shit version of. See?. Yeah.

Jacques Brel told Serge Gainsbourg he was great in songs in which he sang like a crooner, I think he was right (cf Je suis venu te dire que je m'en vais, La javanaise or La chanson de Prévert).
