Hey ya fella, fair question! It all depended on who was available to 'tell the tale'. I'm always very concerned with not imposing on people who give their time and energy to something like this so wherever possible I wanted to find voices who were involved with a release so that I could minimise how much of Thurston's time I took. So, when I spent time with Thurston I focused on releases where no one else but him could comment (either because there were no collaborators or no one available I could locate). I felt Mirror/Dash had been covered so moved on. Much love to the Gum/Electric Pen single though! It's a little gem - and SO different to the later releases under the Mirror/Dash name. |

That's very kind of you! The internet has created a situation where people mistake having the ability to speak with having something to say: I adore the work people put in to fan sites and comments sections because it's the exception and it's building something communal for/with the small groups who are genuinely interested - regardless of people who just want a place to say some rude words, be negative about everything, rip stuff down. I like to think I write from the same place: when I work on a book it's because I love the artist or the topic and want to dedicate hundreds of hours of night and weekend to it - the reward is getting to speak to sooooo many amazing people and to hear their stories. It can be very hard to find a publisher. I was very lucky that Omnibus took a chance on the Thurston book - there wasn't a single major U.S. publisher willing to take it on (too niche - it'd be very different if it was Thurston's autobiography obviously.) Current book is on Swans and it'll come out on Jawbone Press next summer - same situation, loads of rejections for being too niche... |

If I'm not being too forward, if you do read it and enjoy it, I'd be kinda delighted if people had the time to write it on Amazon and some of the other retail sites just so people get a sense of it from actual fans of Thurston's work.

Glad to help you out. Enjoyed the book. One of your reviews on Amazon was a three star review from someone who didn't read the book but felt compelled to comment on how much they disliked Thurston and Kim.

Cheers Hal, genuinely appreciated. And that review you mention was at least really hilarious. I killed myself laughing when I read it...Heck, I just laughed out loud re-reading it too. :-) In it's full glory: "The problem with Sonic Youth LPs is that they sing on them. If they eliminated the vocals, they could have achieved 2nd level Dead C status (and that's not a bad thing). The problem with Thurston Moore has always been that nobody in The History Of Rock has ever tried so hard to adopt a "cool" persona...and for the record his ex-wife Kim Gordon trails a close second. I used to see these two all the time around NYC and it was actually painful to see them "downtown" it up. On the other hand, Lee Ranaldo would come off in Washington Market Park as just a regular dad. I'm giving this book three stars for the simple reason I did not read it. If it was difficult seeing Thurston Moore in real life, why would I want to read a book about him? Three stars seems fair." |

Is ‘regular dad’ really a compliment in this context?

Sure it is. So I assume the review on your next release will read: "I didn't listen to this, but Lee seems like a regular dad, so five stars seems fair."

I re-visited some of the records to accompany the act of reading this book (not that it was actually necessary to enjoy it). Finished a while ago and posted my opinion on Goodreads.
Last week I got to see Martín Escalante (mastermind behind the awesome magazine of erotic photography, "Meche"; and the noise and experimental music label, Sploosh Records), and so I gave him a copy of the book as I know he is a fan of Thurston too, and he actually has a couple of pictures on the book credited to him (one of them was for sure taken by him during Thurston and Mats Gustafsson's show at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter on June 9th, 2013; which was then released as a limited edition LP by Prisma Records (run by Lars Mřrch Finborud and Lasse Marhaug) -that record's artwork consists of some other live photographs taken by Martín during that particular performance). I realized there are a few records mentioned in the book which still are unreleased at this point (in the pipeline now for Sonic 2018, I assume), so it is a really insightful work. Congratulations, Nick. I shall check out the Swans book too, for sure. |
