My friend wants me to DJ his wedding reception.

I DJ'd my sister's wedding reception and had a fun selection, but this time through I want to choose from a bigger pool of music. Especially of 50's and 60's stuff.

I'm going to get some stuff off of What.cd to bulk up on things I need.

I'm going with the MP3 virtual DJ angle again. My vinyl collection is sort of lacking.

Compilations would be best. Because I don't know if I want to have a whole Chubby Checker album just for "The Twist."

1) I second the inclusion of Chantilly Lace. Brilliant song
2) I also second the inclusion of several others that Atari has mentioned, but Chantilly Lace just got me particularly excited
3) Atari has neglected to include The Ronettes' "Baby I Love You" (although I note he has not totally neglected them).

Thinking of songs for a wedding from the eighties is overwhelming me at the moment.

Pylon - M Train
Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love
The Cure - Just Like Heaven
John Lennon - Woman
John Lennon - Just Like Starting Over
Diana Ross & Lionel Richie - Endless Love
Blondie - Atomic

Queen would be good, my friend likes Queen a lot.

I made a list of stuff I already have that is appropriate. I've got some New Order, Prince, Michael Jackson, Cabaret Voltaire, Billy Idol, Tones on Tail, The Vapors, WHAM!, Lipps Inc, DEVO, Roxy Music, B52s, Rick James, the Specials

I love the "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" Queen song...killer tune.
I even like Dwight Yoakam's cover of it.

M train = Marriage train
in the lyrics to that Pylon tune; it's a pro-marriage song.
But you don't have it, nor will you be able to find it.

Thanks for posting that you have the eighties covered, because I just got some time again and I would have sat here for twenty minutes racking my brain and googling away.

After writing those posts, I heard "Chantilly Lace" (no shit), "Sea of Love" (the original version and same one I mentioned), "Dancing in the Street" and "Blue Velvet" just today on one of the cable music stations I had playing in the background.

Hmm, sounds like "Funkytown" and "Superfreak" are gonna be songs you play. And good golly, are you gonna play "Careless Whisper" by Wham! or one of their other crap tunes? You'd be better off with George Michael solo doing "Faith," but I would probably even pass over that one as well. There's some real gold in my fifties, sixities and seventies lists. You would do best to take notice! haha

Jitterbug

yikes...that song's shelf-life expired at least ten years ago...even as kitsch. Well, maybe I'm being too rough. I just know I don't like it. CHOUT, on the other hand, loves it and he usually has good taste(s). It is probably the best song in the entire Wham! catalogue.

"Endless Love" by Diana & Lionel from my lists sucks too; I love me some Diana, but I just put it on there because it's a popular slow dance song at functions to this day.

You wanted comps, right? Here are my faves:

The Complete Stax/Volt Singles 1959-1968 (9 discs of classic soul)--Atlantic Records

Like, Omigod! The '80s Pop Culture Box (Totally) (8 discs)--Rhino Records

(less good) Whatever: The '90s Pop and Culture Box--Rhino Records

Respect: A century of Women in Music (5 disks)--Rhino Records

(You could do a whole wedding with Respect alone)
