i've been to jillian's on that 10 best website. it's more of a sports bar type complex. nothing all that exciting. very "frat boy."
i forgot that they opened a dinosaur barbeque there. i've been to the original in syracuse and it's great - biker bar with good grub. did the kodak place on a fourth grade field trip. maybe it would be more exciting now, but probably not |

I believe Jillian's is a national chain-they had one in Nashville when i lived there. It was a bar, video game arcade, restaurant, and bowling alley all in one. I went there a couple times. Not that great. In Nashville it wasn't frat-boy because it was at Opry Mills mall which is a bit of a drive from Vandy or any of the other colleges. It was more "redneck" than anything else.

We have a Dave and Busters here. I've never been there though.
Doesn't really sound like it would float my boat. |

they have a famous zen temple, if you're into that kind of thing. i believe it was the first established in the u.s. it's actually quite beautiful. -- ps- break a goddamn leg -- edit: go, pilgrim, and ask if you can visit the place: http://www.rzc.org/ (btw, that website is horribly pretentious and poorly designed. i could totally fix it) |

The Bug Jar is a fine establishment. Rochester is kinda boring though. Kim Gordon is rumored to have been born there as well. |

Erm, I'm back. Rochester was great. Eastman was sweet. I met a bunch of music theorists. I had three interviews: one in analysis, one in skills, and one in research. I nearly froze to death. Didn't have a chance to do anything unscheduled besides driving up to take a look at the lake. This is Eastman Theatre:
The bathrooms are spacious and clean. Also, the library is the largest academic music library in the US. It is ridiculous. I looked at a 1st edition of Bach's Die Kunst der Fuge, a manuscript of La Mer in Debussy's hand, a codex from the 12th century, and a bunch of other stuff like that. Good times. |

Yeah, it was awesome in every sense. No monks, but a lot of asian virtuosos in overcoats, which are similar. Grad students eating hot pockets under blankets in their own corner of the library are also a little like monks. I did not see any of those, however. They were eating bagels, muffins, and veggie sandwiches.
I should find out if they're giving me an offer within 3 weeks, maybe sooner. It's not likely, but it would be incredible and a huge validation of what I've been doing. Eastman has possibly the best graduate theory program in the US, maybe tied with Yale or Indiana or CUNY, hard to say. Whether I get in or not, I was thrilled to make it to the interview stage and not make a fool of myself. |
