i just barely saw this movie, I really liked it. It was good compared to a lo of other "kids" movies in the past few years, and it maintained an almost film-noir aspect which was distinctive from the original children's book. I grew up as a kid with it as my favorite, precisely because of the imagery and bit of darkness to it, and so I was glad the film retained and even enhanced this. The filming was superb, the scenery and setting even transcendental, the effects subtle enough to no be so over the top like other CGI movies, and the soundtrack was emphatic and perfectly matched for the pace of the movie. I also like that the movie kepts the underlying themes of the book, that alienation is matched with family love, and that we all need acceptance. The movie more so enhances the ideas of loneliness, isolation and acceptance, but maintains the more positive aspects that the book did, as a kind of fable. Kids are supposed to remember that family is supportive and loving, but that it is a two-way street, we can't be selfish and we can't indulge in our every whim. Also, the monster motif for the monster of insecurity which is in us all.. Tupac said it best, "I hate the reflection of the man in the mirror because he makes the pain seem realer"
Anyone else really enjoy this movie?

Loved it, great "soundwork/sound design", beside the visual eyecandy+proper soundtrack.
I liked your "review", not much to add to it .

I thought it was a cute little film. The imagery was fantastic. That's about all I have to say about it.
And the soundtrack was OK.

I fucking hated the soundtrack. Film was okay. Watched it in a projector. Kind of freaked me out a bit. Found it sort of depressing. Hated the twee elements. Will definitely never watch it again in my life.

so i am the only one that thought that it was boring?
i went with a group a friends and we were all really excited to see it. and we all hated it. it turned such a lovely fairy tale into a typical hollywood film. and the music was so inappropriate in the sense that it was so ubiquitous and so many different songs that it never gave the viewer a chance to feel things on its own. at times it really felt like they screened the film and hit play on a karen O album. love the book though

I find when arty-farty lefties get their greasy mitts on anything, they fucking ruin it with sickening pretentiousness in a bid to impress other arty-farty lefties.

this bummed out seems to be a common response, and while i must agree some parts really did bum me out too, I think overall it was really kind of uplifting, but I am the kind of person that takes solace in things being mutual, others sometimes are more discouraged by this.
