No, it didn't.

The first one had a $4.5 million budget.

It made back $4.1 million. Even counting in video/dvd sales, it wouldn't be good enough, by all conventional logic, to warrant a sequel....

I guess the thinking is, if they make the sequel SUPER CHEAP, they might be able to gain a little bit of a profit. But I wouldn't say the first one "made money". It may have barely gained a small profit, at best. I mean, making the film direct-to-video alone is going to gurantee that it probably will break even (since most of the money spent on small movies like that is done in advertising and so on).

Either way..

Actually the theatrical run of "Donnie Darko" didn't make much money, it sort of came and went. It was re-discovered on DVD.

Patrick Swayze.. okay, he isn't a "big star"... and Gylennhaal somehow became a star after this movie but who knows why since he's TERRIBLE) and a big company producing it, to make...

Of course they blame the fact that "Donnie Darko" came out around the time of the Columbine shootings, and I guess the parallels of bullying, kids getting shot and teenage death, along with child molestation was partly why the movie kind of got the promotional burial.

Exactly: Cult hit. DVD/VHS sales don't factor in that much overall, since it's so expensive to produce DVD's (taking into account the cases and the artwork and the discs themselves), but I'm sure it made a small profit when all is said and done, especially after the double-dip "director's cut" (aka "same movie but longer and with the good music replaced") came out...

Has anyone seen this movie?

It's so awful that it's hilarious. I mean, Jared Leto and Gylennhaal alone are two of the worst actors ever, so you kinda know what you're getting into. There is a weird hippie dude who looks like Weird Al, and then there's an acid trip scene in the graveyard which is 5 minutes of the characters running around and screaming. Adding to the awfulness is a bizarre subplot about Kurt Cobain's suicide (no kidding! The climax of the film takes place at Kurt's "mourning" where Courtney read his suicide note!).

I am pretty sure the only film Gylennhaal film I like is Zodiac. Though he's the worst part of it. He's a 20 year old guy playing a 40 year old writer. Pretty silly, he totally embarassed himself..

My brother saw Donnie Darko premier in LA (for free) and hung out with Gylennhal after and said the guy was too high to have a conversation with.

The first one sucked pretty bad

The only thing I liked about it was Patrick Swayze.

The movie seemed like it was written by a 7th grade teacher, or at least written for 7th graders.

Bubble Boy was hilarious. I like how towards the end he's supposed to be very close to Niagara Falls and you can see the mountains with snow topped peaks in the background.

Sometimes I wonder if people in Hollywood know ANYTHING.
