web admin, html coding, project management, quickbooks (doesnt run on linux but i have a winbox), light image editing (gimp), office apps (open office).

there's also a video editing workstation but that's no problem. it's my laptop that's dying.

it's 5 years old, it's on 24 hours a day, it's suffered some accidents, the pIII 1.2ghz cpu is beginning to feel slow and adobe cs3 apps aren't "supposed to" run (but i run them anyway). the wireless is old & slow (b), the HD is clackety clacking (though i replaced it for a new 72000 samsung), the lcd is bleeding , the power connector is loose and i tried to fix it but i couldn't, the keyboard is giving out, it doesn't have usb2, it doesn't have a DVI connector and i want a new external widescreen because the 19" crt is bulky and old. that's about it i think.

on top of it, i forgot, it's an x30, so i didn't come with a DVD drive-- so i had an external DVD on top of my desk, plus an external music hard drive, plus an external backup hard drive, a usb hub for a all stacked one on top of the other on my desk, wires all over.

but that's done-- i took over the video editing machine. it's got a mirrored system drive, a striped capture array, a 2.4ghz p4, 4 gigs of ram, over 2TB of storage total, a quadro vid card, a new samsung 22" widescreen, etc. sure it's one generation behind in processors but it's got *plenty *of power.

i'll keep the x30 for mobile porn.

you dont really have to be to use one. its just a pain in the ass like if youre used to windows programs or whatever, and transferring all your shit from the old computer onto the new one but that's to be expected.

I don't really know what's good and what's not, what to get and so on and so forth. People tell me to get this and get that and that I should be good if I spend $3000, then I see some Mac laptops in the shop and they range from like $1700 and some cheaper, and of course some dearer. So I'm not sure what to get.

you cant get quickbooks working with wine, but it does work using crossover office
most windows apps will work flawlessly using either wine or codeweavers software

and yeah i also need to get myself a laptop.

they tried to make it more safe for the unexperienced user, they ended up making it boring and complex for anyone with two inches of forehead.

problem with a cheap chassis is that it will be wobbly & susceptible to breaking, damaging the screen.

i've had my ibm sustain several falls and it's remained intact (more or less). anything can happen from tripping on the cable to falling asleep with the thing on your knees (ha), blam, and you are without. if it's going to be a truly portable machine that is. if you're going to treat it like a desktop though, a desktop is cheaper.

another thing to consider is cpu vs battery. if it's not a mobile processor you'll get maybe an hour of battery life.

i recently built a box for a friend using a uATX board & a small case. i didn't get one of these but some gaming boxes have a handle to make them "portable": http://2cooltek.com/Product/thermalt...vf1000bws.html

you know, if you must have a laptop, 1300 euros is almost $1900, i think you can price a starter macbook pro in the u.s. for $2000. get somebody who's traveling to bring you one, fuck the criminal VAT.

and yeah i like xp but they won't sell it for much longer & it's going to age fast and vista yuck yuck yuck.
