nonesuch explorer has released some excellent gamelan stuff (among a whole lot of other awesome stuff i'm sure, but so far i've only listened to some of their balinese music releases)
thee are several different styles of gamelan. this one has an older type of gamelan (i'd have to google for what it's called) and it's really great. my favourite from what i've heard this one is also great and has not only gamelan, but also kecak, the balinese "monkey chant": |

Yep, I also have that Gamelan of the Love God one. It's pretty good. The other one sounds ace though....the kecak thing is really, really fantastic. You used to be able to download and example of it from ubu.com. Not sure if you still can but probably worth a look.

yes, the kecak thing on golden rain is fantastic, but when we're only talking about the gamelan then i think the other one is better.

Locust Music reissued a 1970 LP of a group that did modernist compositions for Gamelan Ensemble that looks pretty interesting.
There is also a local group here in Minneapolis that does the same type of thing. They are called the International Novelty Gamelan. http://myspace.com/internationalnoveltygamelan Nonesuch put out a few good Gamelan LPs in the 1970s as well. I also have a bamboo gamelan CD that's pretty good. It's called "Jegog: The Bamboo Gamelan Of Bali," performed by Werdi Sentana. |

Gamelan is a large metallic mallet instrument played in Bali and other areas of the south pacific very much resembling a large vibraphone or xylophone
My favorite of the Elektra/Nonesuch comps is Music from the Morning of the World featuring the "Monkey Chant" performed by something like 200 monks and plenty of Balinese Gamelan peices as well. |

"A gamelan is a kind of musical ensemble of Indonesian origin typically featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums, and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings, and vocalists may also be included. The term refers more to the set of instruments than the players of those instruments. A gamelan as a set of instruments is a distinct entity, built and tuned to stay together — instruments from different gamelan are not interchangeable." all these instruments compromise a GAMELAN
