AGREED! Always looked at this picture thinking "Damn.. this guy is really cool.. and he passed away in '82!". His aura just radiates originality, as he was completely from any "scene" that was going on at the time. The Cyberpunk band... |

"The name is derived from cybernetics and punk and was originally coined by Bruce Bethke as the title of his short story “Cyberpunk,” published in 1983,[1] although the style was popularized well before its publication by editor Gardner Dozois. It features advanced science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or a radical change in the social order." I've been reading cyberpunk since 88 or so. I've never heard of the 2 people above. My understanding is cyberpunk originally revolved around a core of 5 writers: Gibson, BRUCE STERLING, RUDY RUCKER, LOUIS SHINER and JOHN SHIRLEY. Vernor Vinge is thought to have written the first actual "jack-in" type story. did Dozois work with Sterling? But they refer back to some of the 'new wave " of scifi from the 60's, people like Norman Spinrad or Charles Platt or PKD. I don't believe PKD was in anyway cyberpunk, if anything he was a metaphysician disguised as a novelist. John Shirley's recent "lost cyberpunk" Black Glass was pretty cool, but City Come a Walkin was actually published in 1980 - 30 years ago! If you haven't read the core books of this group from the 1980's youre talking around the subject. |

I was looking through my cyberpunk books last night and realized there is a strong link between pkd and cyberpunk and that link is KW Jeter. PKD wrote the intro to Jeter's Dr Adder, which came out in 84 but had been written in the 70's. Jeter and Tim Powers among others were part of literary scene based around pkd. Dr Adder was held in high regard by cyberpunk fans, I am pretty sure it is on Branca's list.

Jeter's a definite link. I've only read Dr Adder but that seems to tap into a lot of contemporary sf, particularly areas interested in aspects of body modification.

I reading Count Zero and should finish it soon. I like it. My favorite line is when Lucas and Bobby are standing in front of Finn's brownstone and Lucas says "first thing you learn, is you always gotta wait." Next up on the list is The Illuminatus! trilogy. Anyone here read it? |
