MEMOIRS OF AN AESTHETE ist kaput list feb/mar 07
The final 3 releases from Memoirs out now – plus a list of old stuff which is still available. We’re shutting up shop so once these are gone they’re gone. YELLOW SWANS & ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS – PSYCHEDELIC USED CAR LOT BLUES (3inch cdr) 5.00 english pounds Pissed-oric live collaboration recorded live in Sheffield in front of a paying audience! Electronic meltdown, reed squeal and liberated pounding, as you’d have come to expect. Edition of 100 numbered copies. ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS – CAEDUCEUS & BLACK SAL (cdr) 6.00 english pounds Two dogs for the new year. Caeduceus floats on broken battery amps and wobbly sheets of tin foil noise modulation. Black Sal’s clubfoot samba rhythms and big muff guitar interweavings provide ample evidence as to why Ash Nav’s set at All Tomorrows Parties last year was roundly condemned as “Santana” in certain circles. Edition of 100 numbered copies in pink painted clamshell covers. LAST NIGHT ON EARTH – LSD 2 (cdr) 6.00 english pounds Glasgow drone magic from Jani Hervoten (UTON), Chris Hladowski (SCATTER, THE ONE ENSEMBLE OF DANIEL PADDEN, NALLE) and Ben Reynolds. A sizzling psych summit to end all sizzling psych summits. Edition of 60 numbered copies. These still available – CZECH NYMPHS - 2 (LP ltd. 200) 10.00 great british pounds First (and last)Memoirs vinyl LP release! The essence of outsider psychedelic electronics composed and performed by Phil Todd (ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS, INCA EYEBALL, HITLER AIRBAG etc). Influences include CCCC, Jean-Claude Eloy, Master Wilburn Burchette, Metal Machine Music, Incapacitants, old fairground rides, the sound of low flying planes over LS6 especially the latter etc. Punk's not dead, it just stinks of silver spraypaint. ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - SOME CAT LOST IN HIS OWN PICTURE (7") 4.50 quid as we say over here Still some copies left of this limited to 170 six-track EP, over two years since it fucking came out. And you wonder why we’re closing down, huh? You’ll all want one when they’re finally gone (in the year 2026 at this rate). UTON - WHITE LIGHT (CDR ltd.100) 6.00 great british pounds New ultra-minimal string excursions from this Finnish artist now resident in India. A ascetic sound pallette of strum and scrawp revealing intense swirling beauty and lost in the woods Nordic aurora. MYSTERY WATER SALOON BOYS - VERTICAL POLSKA SEVENTIES GATEFOLD (double CDR ltd.100) 8.00 gbp Hot on the dragging heels of their 23 Productions release, the duo of Chris Hladowski (SCATTER, NALLE, ONE ENSEMBLE OF DANIEL PADDEN etc) and Phil Todd (ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS, CZECH NYMPHS et al) stretch out with basement raga, faux Ocora field pipes and hot creamy guitar bouzouki esraj mandolin moog casio percussion preserve. Cover art designed to stop Roger Dean from shitting himself. Real exciting double free sound to hide from the Xmas onslaught inside. ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - BANANAURORA THE YELLOW HARVEST (3 inch CDR ltd.100) 5.00 gbp Three new solo Phil Todd cuts. Digital canaries with run-down batteries, the little cymbals in glaring close-up, motorik white casio grooves and guitar silt shit slagheaps. Just what you fucking need. Covers look nice too, for what its worth. EL-G - L'ECHELLE (CDR ltd.60)6.00 gbp Hot new artiste from glamorous Paris, where the men have two penises each and worship old Serge G. LIKE A GOD. GOT THAT? A supremely unhinged blend of free sound mechanics and bent psych folk. Will remind non-Gallic record collectors of their 70s Brigitte/Areski LPs, but this is happening now. And it definitely doesn't involve forays into bad electronica. Phil Todd plays guest appendage guitar too. ZEN NUNS (CDR ltd.100) 6.00 gbp Sometime in the mid-90s, Lasse Marhaug (JAZZKAMMER, DEL etc) and Phil Todd (ASHTRAY N etc) made a fearsome psychedelic racket together and released it on the oTo branch of the Robert Hayler's late Fencing Flatworm imprint. Now here is a CDR reissue in some sort of approximation of the original packaging (used maps) with added gold gocco print. That is all you need to know really. SABOTEUSE - WORSHIP THE DEVIL (CDR ltd.100) 6.00 gbp Twin guitar/drum attack with chilling vocal recitation by Joincey (PUFF STUCKOMETER INCA EYEBALL WAGSTAFF et al) and Andy Jarvis (SCULPTRESS A WARM PALINDROME HELVETICA FIRSTPERSON). Very aligned to the aura of the borough of Stoke On Trent. Not an insult. ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - COBRIDGE RED CHURCH AND OTHER VISUAL SPLENDOURS (CDR) 6.00 GBP Reissue of 1998 CDR originally shat forth by Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers (whatever that was) and thought lost forever until very recently. But it's back. Three hot tracks from 1995-1998, 67 minutes. Ltd.100 SCULPTRESS - WE DON'T HAVE A THING (cdr) 6.00GBP Debut "album" by this Stoke On Trent New Psychedelic combo (beating Foxy Digitalis to the punch - ha ha) featuring Andy & Miklarla Jarvis (A WARM PALINDROME, ANNA PLANETA etc etc), Anthony Joinson (INCA EYEBALL, COITS, WAGSTAFF etc etc), Andy Robbins (ace CDR on Firstperson) and frequent Ashpan Nabbigators collaboratrix Melanie Delaney. Something pretty unique in a world ass-packed with derivatives, Sculptress blend lush psych-folk, avant-classical drones, strange disembodied voices rising through a junkyard full of static, the tawrdy electronic delights of Joincey's magic toolbox and much more. Three years in the works and segueing live shows from Stoke and Leeds, domestic dramas and a solo Mikarla performance in a Japanese primary school. Their "Anthem Of The Sun" I guess. There only actual vinyl record is from last year, right? Everything else is cd or tape or something? Please tell me if I'm wrong! Ashray are definitely a band that need to come to the US. Along with Clearframe. |

Yeahp...I could manage collecting Ashtray Navigations records but recordings in general would be something of an undertaking.
Forget about going to the US. Ashtray need to play around the UK more...like, for example, Cardiff (HINT HINT). |
