So I just bought the compilation Tropicalia: A Brazilian Revolution in Sound and I am totally in love with it. It has stuff from Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, and Jorge Ben. This is the first time Im hearing all these artists but I love them all...

...I would love to hear some recommendations on which albums by these artists I should check out or if there are any similar artists to these worth looking into!

Thanks in advance!

let me ask you something straight:

why are os mutantes considered to be so good? i really don't see anything special in them, it's all tgeneric psychedelic garage rock with a little bit of samba. it's kinda like early santana without the killer jams.

so maybe i'm missing something...

I had not heard of Os Mutantes before getting this CD, and they have about 5 tracks on it. Yeah, its not anything that will blow you away, but I think its pretty original and a fun listen...I especially like that track they do called "Quem Tem Medo de Brincar De Amor."

Check out the Tropicalia compliations Soul Jazz has released. A good resource.

I was thinking about starting a thread about Tropicalia. Considering its World Cup time, and Brasil are god like on the pitch.

i've got the tropicalia compilation too and I love it but haven't really followed up on any of the artists, probably out of availability. I've heard Tom Ze has some good albums where he gets a bit more experimental than the other tropicalia artists.

[1968] Os Mutantes: MY favorite songs are "O Relógio", "Bat Macumba", "Panis et Circence" and "A Minha Menina".

[1969] Mutantes: Faves are "Dia 36", "Fuga nº II"
"Banho de Lua" and "Magica".

[1970] A Divina Comédia ou ando meio desligado : This is more like a "rock" record, my faves: "Jogo de Calçada", "Meu Refrigerador Nào Funciona"
"Desculpe, Babe", "Ave, Lucifer" and "Hey Boy".

If i had to pick one, It would be the Mutantes (1969) record, 'cause that album is GREAT, especially after the first 2 songs when "Dia 36" starts.

Now, Gal Costa...:

[1969] Gal Costa : Faves: "Namorinho de Portão", "Não Identificado" , "Se Voçê Pensa", "Que Pena" <-- Gal with Caetano together!! beautiful!, and then "Baby" I like this version better than the Mutantes version.

[1969] Gal: "Tuareg", "País Tropical", "Cinema Olympia" and "Meu Nome é Gal"

If i had to pick one, it would definitely be the Gal Costa (1969) record, i think this is a classic.

yes. although i'd pick the first os muntates record over the second.

other things:

jorge ben - africa brasil
nara leao - nara '67
milton nascimento & lo borges - clube de esquina

i've always wondered what it is that makes that strange monkey noise you hear in tropicalia songs? Is it an instrument or a vocal technique? I was watching a documentary on seu jorge last week and there were a few performances on it which had that sound, the only thing that I could guess at that was making it looked like a drum that a guy had his hand inside

Caetano Veloso's first two s/t albums from 1967 and 68(?) are excellent. Transa from 1972 is my favorite, possibly because most of the lyrics are in a language i can understand.
