Mine arrived last week, I've been pleasantly surprised by it. I tend to favour TM's improv sides with drummers (Lost to the City, Not Me, this years great Comes Through in the Call Hold etc) as, to my mind, his principle strength as an improviser is textural. On occasion I find his approach too myopic to be truly dialectic when playing with 'melody' instruments, however when playing in a context with people with similar agendas it works really well.
The aforementioned Comes Through in the Call Hold surprised me with a deftness of approach to the duo playing, something carried over onto this record. I feared the worst during the opening moments as T runs through his different distortions but, that aside, the whole thing is balanced & responsive - a genuine conversation between the pair, and stands alongside the better things in TM's improvised discography. IMHO of course. |

Just picked this up at the weekend, just saw it in a record store, wasn't actually aware it existed, Jesus it's really fucking good.. Nice to hear at a time I was starting to become somewhat jaded with collecting all available Sonic Youth side project output..

Got this also some time ago. I think itīs not the greatest lately output of Thurston, but it is anyway really good! Zorn is lot better than for example Gustaffson.

Zorn and Gustafsson are totally different, but I can't say which one of them is better. |

Zorn is more sophisticated but I really like wall of sound Gustafsson is blowing. Most of the Zorn's albums are awesome but so are The Thing and Fire! albums.

I really must check out more John Zorn, for some reason he sounds different to what I anticipated having heard his name mentioned several times over the years.
