Lost is like the X-Files, they're bullshitting about a master plan and making it up as they go along. They cover this by being as undefined as possible and drawing things out to a snails pace. You want a story that was plotted out into multi-season plan watch Babylon 5.
The Wire - damn good. Only seen the American version of The Office - meh. Also go see Da Vinci's Inquest - dont know about the start or early on but from about season 4 onwards (when I caught it late one night) that is out standing.
