burzum was started a few years before he went to prison, all the "classic" burzum material was recorded before he went to prison, and he was never in mayhem he just played bass on one of their albums, and that was after burzum had been going for a couple of years anyway.

im pretty sure playing bass in mayhem for an ablum means he was in mayhem, i mean, i consider him to have been in mayhem. as for the other stuff, i dont agree.

no, t&b is right, he wasn't in mayhem when he recorded the tracks in de mysteriis, he was a session player helping them out; he never played live with them and probably never even rehearsed for them. and euronymous invited varg because he loved burzum, in fact, burzum had already released the s/t and the aske ep by the time of de mysteriis.

he was originally in old funeral (with future members of immortal) and then in uruk hai, which evolved into burzum.

i think that's partly the point. there's a certain amount of humour to be found in black metal, some of those bands understand that venom weren't entirely serious about the who satanism malarkey, darkthrone are another BM band who i think can be taken with a degree of humour, although that doesn't mean that bands like that aren't serious about making awesome music.
obviously there are many other BM bands/people who are genuinely nasty or insane, e.g. burzum, graveland, drudkh... etc.

absolutley. ill admit it took me a long time to look past the racism, misogyny, homophobia, and all together the violent personalities that are prevalent in that whole scene, but then i realized hip hop has some of these same associations and decided to take them with a grain of salt and checked out a lot of the bands. I then realized that black metal is responsible for some of the most creative, sonically appealing, and funny agressive music ever. I actually owe it to my brother, hes big into black metal and he first got me into it by lending me darkthrone's "transylvanian Hunger", that ablum kinda opened my mind up to the music and is still my favorite Black Metal record.

transilvania hunger is like black metal distilled into it's most brutal and bare essentials, while at the same time embodying what's so great about it, soundwise.

"skald av satans sol" has one of my favorite riffs ever.
