I'm planning on buying a cheap saxophone from eBay, but I don't really know anything about them. I know there are a few different kinds, alto, tenor, soprano, but which one would sound best when played by itself (with no other saxophones or other woodwind/brass instruments)?

Go Baritone or Tenor.
You seem like an OK guy, and I would hate to have to start hating you, which I would if you bought a soprano sax on purpose. Soprano saxes are harder to pull off than a waxed moustache.

i tried to learn sax once, made me wana quit smoking, but i couldnt quit smoking, so i quit sax.

i've played alto for some 8 years now. it's probably the easiest to learn on, tenor takes a little more force to blow into and have it sound clean

Alto is the best for beginners. A Baritone sax is huge; it is more oriented towards bass parts, a tenor is in the middle of the other two, in terms of size; it is more oriented towards playing jazz. Also, if you've never played a woodwind instrument, go with the alto since its smaller. If you get a bigger one, it will be harder to blow and you'll get light-headed.

Yeah, and Roland Kirk was amazing with a noseflute. Let's not get distracted with the rare instances of greatness on what is, in essence, a rubbish instrument.
