I find the whole celebrity culture disturbing. Theres something wrong with a culture that worships fame for fame's sake. Just because someone is well known doesnt mean they are god-like creatures that can do anything. I'm really afraid of this culture bleeding into something as critical to our society as politics. We need real, visionary, intelligent people in goverement. We dont need famous faces with funny little catchphrases. There has to be more than face. Government is not just another stage its real. Its about the actual running of a country. I dont think people know the difference anymore. Should we really give such a huge amount of power to someone just because we recogize them from some film we quite enjoyed. The real question is would old Arnold be governor if we hadnt see him in Terminator and The Last Action Hero? The answer is no. Its a issue that goes right to heart of western culture. If I ran for governor (of what is in essense a state the size of a small country) people would question my experience, what makes me think I can just come off the street and run a state? Which is a more than legitimate question. Its funny we dont ask celebrities these questions....

Another point. Does it really reflect well on a state when a its recall election is dominated by actors, billionaires and pornstars? What is California, Fucking Disneyland?

Well what makes you think that he isn't a brilliant visionare? I mean he is still human, unless all those other politicians are robots ? I mean I am not defending him, cause I still don't trust him. Really if you think about it there are famous people who are smart who can better the country.

Yes. If we must have a celebrity, cant we at least have a GOOD actor. It looks most unprofessional to have the star of tripe like Terminator running the state.

I just find it funny that Republicans constantly whine about how the Democratic party has Hollywood in its pocket, and yet they are the ones who have voted for two former actors for major govermental positions. Remember, Gov. of CA is how President Regan started too, but Arnold can't run for President, yet.

Thank God!
To have one bad actor in the white house may be regarded as a misfortune; to have two looks like carelessness.

when i was in california, LA and san bernadino in particular i was amazed at how many people with severe problems there where on the streets and the fact that there was no place that they could go too. also the fact that people really didnt seem to give a shit about them was really awful. i saw a homeless man guy die on hollywood boulevard and he lay there for ages before anyone came for him. not everyone is uncaring or not bothered, so i am not generalising everyone. there needs to be something in place because otherwise things will just be bad.

apparently the governator is quite a pragmatic guy who was pushed back from his extreme positions by the legislature and the people. since he's not the complete meathead most people think he is, he started a swift move to the centre where he's been quite successful. he's one of the few republicans to admit the existence of global warming. he's for stem cell research. and calling for universal health care is what got the clinton government into trouble in their early days.

i predict reelection, and i don't think that would actually be so bad, partisan preferences aside.

o wait, term limits apply i think. so scratch that. but i think he'll be a tough act to follow.

I do take the point that california could have a much worse governor. I guess my main worry is the kinda of message it sends out. That anyone with a famous face and money can just decide to become Governor.

In fairness I wouldnt stand for a position as high as that without having some prior lower level experience. I think the UK is about as big as California. So from my point of view its like someone being on Coronation Street one second and being Prime Minister the next. The whole thing reeks of insanity and irresponsibility. Arnie probebly has been very lucky so far and has some very good people around him. I just believe major politicians should have experience and should work up slowly gaining the nessassary skills to take on such a big job. And it really is a big job being Gov. of California.

Well when you got Mary Cary (pornstar) and Galleger running in the same race, AND Schwaznegger looked like the most logical canidiate, what do you expect? The election was a shame, and the Republican party were responsible, California had a Dem Governor in Gray Davis, and while he didn't cause a lot of the problems he was blamed for (I.E. Power storage, and Defict), he pretty much paid the price for problems he inherited coming into the job.
