Which do you think it is? Do SY do better if they have a lot of time to work out ideas and experiment with things or do you think they need to just get their ideas all out at once while their songs are still fresh before it loses that initial enthusiasm?

Maybe looking at how long it took them to record some of their albums will help you decide which method works better for them?

just some quick facts:
DDN recorded between July-August 1988
Sister recorded between March-April 1987
Bad Moon Rising between September- December 1984
Dirty recorded during March 1992
Washing Machine recorded between Jan-May 1995

Very interesting question, but can you arrive at the answer by looking at actual studio time for past albums? I suspect there are probably too many other variables.

I'm curious as the how long EVOL took.

But as a general answer, I suppose it depends on what they're trying to do. Something more mangled and raw needs less studio time, something attempting to be accessible and a whole work needs more studio time. Pretty obvious answer, sorry.

they come out better when they take more time writing and playing songs before recording.

Yep, songs written and completed in the studio often lack the energy of ones that have been played live and tested.
