question 3 - do you not understand the dynamics of popularity? it takes time and it builds exponentially. the more a band is discussed by people the more people will check out said band, and the more you will hear about them etc. it is a feedback loop.

I think a mainstream C-level celebrity like Rachel ray wanting to have battles play at her party is fucking COOL and it makes me wonder if she is not the flighty dipshit she portrays on her show.

question: no, they are not.
question 2: named one of the albums of the year by nearly every list (including time magazine for example).
question 3: yes, true. there's also fad popularity where something is fashionable and talked bout by many people and then dropped entirely for the next fashionable bit. battles are fashionably now.

you raise a good point there rob in the last paragraph, and yes, i do perceive her as being very acted all the time.

Why is there so much shit these days? I listened to my former office mate's radio show on the college station back home in Iowa City this afternoon. It sucked. Why did it suck? Because aside from some Nick Drake, it was all "Pitchfork popular" stuff. And not even good Pitchfork--it was stuff they rate like 6 or 7. Mediocre indie is really bad indie. Bloc Party!? Give me a break. The Go Team? Blecchh....

The thing that irks me about his show and the station generally is that they're afraid to play anything older than about 4 years. And get into anything really old, like Velvet Underground or Pink Floyd, or Captain Beefheart? Unthinkable.
