That one is what I'd recommend first, then Electr-o-pura, then I Can Hear The Heart Beating as one. Can't really go wrong, I don't think.

Here are the old threads:

The newest one ...Not Afraid of You... is excellent from top to bottom, imo.
You can always start with that and work your way backward. |

My favorite Yo La Tengo album for some reason seems to be I Can Hear The Heart Beating as one. Electr-o-Pura is decent but not a solid throughout in my mind. My first YLT album though which I also like a lot is Summer Sun.

I'm torn with Yo La Tengo. Half their songs are amazing and the other half are boring as.

Soooooo
You should continue with Electropura then Painful then I can hear your heart beating this the core of their output but then they released a bunch of sophomore LPs before that Ride the tiger, May I sing with me, Fakebook et alll.... I'm a bit less into these they're very good also. The later stuff (I'm not afraid and Summer sun) are tad less inspired but man it's all good. Good band, saw them live a couple of years ago and the dude ripped his guitar frantically, amazing. Far from groundbreaking but damn nice!!!! GO! |

I've only listened to five of their albums and would rank them like this:
1)I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One 2)Painful 3)I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass 4)President Yo La Tengo/New Wave Hot Dogs (2 in 1) 5)And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out Very good band.

I'm surprised there's not a lot of people agreeing with me.
If you took the rocking songs off their holy trinity (Painful, Electr-o Pura, I can hear the etc) and put them onto an album, it'd be the best album of the 90's, I shit you not. |

Haha, I was just about to post "What a shameless Fender ripoff!" then realised what it said.
