Lonesome Crowded West. Never enjoyed anything after that, which is a shame as the earlier stuff is great (sorry for the indie cliché).

Lonesome Crowded West has some cool songs but it's too long. Most of their stuff sounds like a bad Pixies wannabe. Not completely awful but hard to listen to at times. "Breakthrough" is an awesome song though.

Well they grew on me again lately, mostly their first two albums. I mean both albums have the same song(lounge) but are both epic.

You should, it's their best really. I love it so much, Crowded is the same lenght but i nearly never make it to the end without shutting the sound down somewhere in truckers atlas.

The Moon & Antarctica, one of the most classic indie records ever, that's all.

love them. "the moon & antarctica" is my favorite. that album meant a lot to me after my dad passed away, as sentimental and cheesy as that sounds.
they were great up until and including that one. i don't mind the direction they took with "good news..." but that one and "we were dead..." are wildly inconsistent albums, and modest mouse used to do such a fantastic job of making "albums" with specific moods and themes and shit. still some good songs on both. |

Shit, I haven't listened to Modest Mouse in forever. In fact, I think that this thread may have inspired me to go listen to them now. I used to really love this band, but I dunno... I just kinda got into other stuff and stopped listening to them. I couldn't even tell you what their last album was, but my favorite was The Moon and Antarctica, followed by Lonesome Crowded.

I think their last album was called "I'm not a drunk anymore, and Johnny Marr is with us now."
The first thing I heard by this band was called Sad Sappy Sucker or something like that, back in 2001. It was a lot more interesting than the Pixies worship stuff. It had answering machine songs on it. Still, it was just alright. |

Hahahaha! Is Johnny Marr still with them? I saw them a few years ago with Marr and they sounded like shit. I dunno if it was just the venue, or where I was standing or what, but the sound was just fucking awful and incomprehensible. It was kinda dissapointing cause I was totally looking forward to seeing them. Still, it was kinda cool to see Johnny Marr. I've always loved the Smiths and his guitar playing in particular. |

I don't think he's still with them, but I also don't think they're really making any music right now either. I know he played guitar for the soundtrack to Inception, though.
And he is definitely one of the best guitarists ever, technically and otherwise. Every Smiths song had like 15 guitar tracks! Always just subtle little variations and neat little effects to create that big jangly wall of clean guitar sounds. He said for this charming man, there were 2 or 3 tracks of him throwing a knife at a guitar. What the hell? |

johnny marr is with the cribs now. i think he might be done with modest mouse. he hasn't toured with them in a while.
his addition was kind of useless anyway. i couldn't tell he was on "we were dead..." at all. |

The only one I seldom find myself listening to is the fruit that ate itself.

Hard question, since they're one of my favorite bands, but Lonesome Crowded West beats M&A in a close one. For the record I think Building Nothing Out Of Something, while a 7-inch comp, is among their best stuff.
I never truly got the Pixies comparison, to be honest with you. Sure, Sad Sappy Sucker kinda has the influences, and on the first few albums Isaac's voice does sound like Black Francis, but musically they're a lot different. Completely different guitar and bass parts, dynamics, arrangements, melodies, etc. I mean, yeah, they were definitely influenced by the Pixies, and some songs you can certainly say "Yeah, they were definitely listening to the Pixies when writing that song" but to the people who call them Pixies Jr..... I just don't see it. Way too many differences for it to be "exact" (Same with the the critics who say Nirvana are nothing but a Pixies ripoff band, just too many glaring differences). I think MM has more depth to their music, but that's just my opinion. ~Jeremy~
