Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claims the promotion and teaching of the artform is not compatible with country's sacred regime Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said today that music is "not compatible" with the values of the Islamic republic, and should not be practised or taught in the country. In some of the most extreme comments by a senior regime figure since the 1979 revolution, Khamenei said: "Although music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic." crazy shit huh? Fuck man, imagine the poor kids in Iran that dream of rocking out. Hell, imagine the kids that dream of studying fucking piano!

Iran has rarely given permission to concerts, as it fears that the opposition might use it as an opportunity to express itself, said Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Iran's most prolific and popular classical vocalist.
"They are afraid of my concerts because of those moments before the concert is begun, when the whole hall is in silence and darkness when someone suddenly shouts 'death to dictator' and everybody accompanies and they are unable to identify that person," Shajarian said.

no, music fosters a guided meditation outside of the ritualistic meditation guided by the imams and the quranic liturgies.. never forget that Iran has plenty of music, it is just clerical, liturgical, hymnal.. In this instance, the establishment is simply trying to be the big kahuna and run the Top 40 with an iron fist. Essentially, the Ayatollah attempting to be the Rick Dees of Persia..

Remember when the Chinese purged western music and musical instruments?
Maybe we will get the Iranian Lang Lang out of this

this is a bit deeper, it not just foreign music that Iran is rejecting, it is anything not orthodox liturgical, sort of like the Pope declaring that the only legitimate music for Catholics could be listening to and participating in the prayer services, the Masses, the Vigils, the Psalms, the Hymns etc etc Diehard pentecostals do this, where preachers and youth ministers encourage people to throw out any "secular music" (honestly, I had never heard this term before until arguing with Christafari's Mark Mohr) and replacing it with all the tailor made "Christian" music found in the gift shop of the church, horrible, imitation music of any genre with the artful lyrics replaces with cliched and hackneyed hymnography.. There is plenty of indigenous, artistic music in Iran that is being persecuted in the name of religious zeal (well a power trip in the name of religiousity)

My question is, why do the people of Iran stand for this? Hell, the shah wasn't much better than the current regime and they booted his ass out.

My vocational teacher in high school believed that the only music worth hearing was christian music and that all other music was worthless. He didn't outright say it was heretical or blasphemous, but you could tell he danced around that train of though.
I may have gotten him to listen to Ministry after he saw me wearing a 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' t-shirt.

what gets me is that withered-fuck ayatolah is not talking about rock n roll, or rap, or any supposedly "decadent" and "depraved" music form. he is talking about MUSIC. as in clasical instruments, classical study, song, pianos, etc. fucking crazy! as if the people of Iran need another thing to bleaken (is that a word? If not, I claim it for -FUPPETS-) their day.
