been a while since any real political news of substance has arisen, but it appears while not officially announced that Sen. Joe Biden is gonna be the vice-presidential nom

i personally think this is an amazing choice, of all of the original dem nominees, he seemed the most lively and had some of the best character issues, and someone who i like more then Obama as someone who hasn't been happy the way Obama has been straddling the center and saying the "right thing" to say, a straight shooter like Biden is a massive boost http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Biden |

He's an interesting choice. The whole thing reminds me of Tony Blair's decision to appoint John Prescott as deputy Primeminister. The Times today described how Obama presented binden as "a scrappy “working-class kid” who is as at home in a bar as on Capitol Hill." Very similar to the way an image conscious Blair played up Prescot's earthiness and experience.
As it happened, despite his political experience, Prescott proved quite incapable of rising to challenge of the job. Grittiness and experience proving a poor indicator of sound judgement. I think Obama is playing a fairly risky game here, I only hope it works out for him. As a European aware of the global significance of this upcoming election, I don't like the idea of a McCain victory coming as the result of a tactical misjudgement by Obama. Certainly he could do without a scandal like this during the run-up period: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yG8buxb0lg |

ha ha oh hey man i was gone this weekend yeah biden-- we'll see how that plays out. i would have liked bill richardson. obama is 4 points behind in new mexico. he'd be ahead with richardson who is a very popular governor. but then, "a black" and "a hispanic" might have been too much for mainstream america. i'm trying to understand the rationale behind this pick. don't get me wrong, biden seems a likeable guy, it's just that, ha ha, fucking mccain already took ads where biden was saying obama has no experience etc etc. ! |

Actually that makes sense. Much of the rationale, I think, is rooted in addressing the "inexperience" thing. It's been the only strong arguement thrown around since Obama jumped in.

Because New Mexico would be a big swing state? I'm seriously asking--I don't know. Personally I think Biden was an extremely wise choice.

yes that is the idea. also to connect with "working class whites". people who are reluctant to vote for a black president on the basis of skin color alone. which are a lot of people. but that ad came out AFTER the veep nomination. so-- tricky you see. |

RIchardson's good, I'll give you that. But Biden--he can be an attack dog. He'll go after the bastards and let Obama look like the nice guy. It's a good, smart combo, I think.

The thing I like about Biden in context of this ticket is that he brings some appearance of toughness to it. A very subjective thing, but Obama "looks" tougher and stronger because of Biden on the ticket.

the last bit of people obama needs to sell to is white middle class women over 40 who are still sore about hillary losing.
